Council Races
Seeding for Runs: The race field is divided into cells of equal size, with the cells rotated the first run of each race to allow each racer the opportunity to race in the first seed. Seeding for the second run is based on first run finish times. The top 15 finishers are raced in reverse order, followed by all remaining racers in order of finish time. Racers not completing the first run race at the end.

For each race, the previous race's first cell moves to the end of the start list. VARA determines the number of cells by the number of races, so that everyone gets to start in the first cell once. They determine the number racers in each cell by dividing the number of racers by the number of races.

Number and Format: 3 giant slalom; 2 slalom; 1 super giant slalom

J3 Vermont State Championships

All Junior III racers (13 and 14 year olds) are eligible to compete for a position on the Southern Vermont Junior Council Team to represent the Council at the Vermont State Championship.

Scoring:

There will be a total of 16 contested finishes based on the 3 giant slalom, 2 slalom, and 1 super giant slalom races scheduled for the season. The super giant slalom will be a one run race. All other races are two runs, with both individual and combined runs counting as a contested finish.

Each racer is ranked in order of his or her individual and combined times on each of the 16 finishes, with boys and girls ranked separately.

QUALIFYING FOR THE COUNCIL TEAM:
Half the total number of contested finishes will be used to determine placement on the Council Team. If all 6 races are held (16 finishes), a total of 8 contested finishes will be used. Whenever there is an odd number of total contested runs, the number of qualifying runs is always to be rounded down to the nearest whole number (e.g., ½ of 15 contested runs equals 7½ and is rounded down to 7)

Selection to the Council Team is as follows:

the race field will be separated into males and females
the sum of the racer’s best finish rankings on 8 out of a possible 16 finishes will be used
in case of ties, the best finish within the 8 contested runs will be used to break the tie
REQUIREMENTS FOR BEING NAMED TO THE COUNCIL TEAM:
Regardless of final ranking and standing, only racers who are current in their memberships to VARA and USSA and who have a valid competitor’s license are eligible to be named to the Council Team and to participate in the State Championship
1. The J3 State Championships will consist of 1 super-G race (weather permitting), 1 giant slalom race, and 1 slalom race.

2. Participation: 150 racers will qualify for the J3 State Championships from the council race series. The total quota (150) will be allocated to each council based on their percentage of the entire Vermont J3 field.

3. The total field in each council will be based on the number of "starters" after the first two council races. Note: racers may not be counted as "starters" until they are VARA members. The total field in each council is then used to calculate each council's share of the entire Vermont J3 field. Calculated quotas will be rounded down, and additional spots will be allocated based on the decimal portion (highest to lowest) of the calculated quota to arrive at the final quotas.

4. An additional 15 racers (9 boys, 6 girls) will qualify for J3 State Championships from the J3 State Shootout (see description of J3 State Shootout below).

5. Each council will designate 5 "automatics" to the Junior Olympics - gender split to be determined by council.

6. Seeding for the J3 States will be as follows: First run will be a draw of the first 15 racers for each discipline (top 5 each council). The rest of the field will be in order of ranking from each council. Race organizers will execute the draw to determine the council order and top 15 seeding. Second run will be by Eastern Modified Bibbo in which all seeds will be protected.

J3 State Shootout
The J3 State Shootout will be a one-day event. It will consist of 4 runs of dual style modified giant slalom. The race will be conducted using a dual format.
Participation: All racers who have not qualified for the J3 State Championships from their council race series are eligible to participate in this event.
Seeding: the field will be seeded in order of ranking from each council. Race organizers will execute the draw to determine the council order. The running order will remain the same for each of the four runs.
The top 9 boys and 6 girls will qualify to participate in the J3 State Championships. Selection will be based on the best 1 of 4 runs. Ties will be broken by next best runs.
A) If an athlete qualifies for the J3 States from council quota selection and cannot go to states the council will fill the spot with the next council racer in line for the states. If the shoot out has already taken place and the next council person has already made states via the shootout the council will go down their list.
B) If an athlete qualifies for the J3 States via the J3 Shootout and cannot participate at the J3 States then that spot will be filled by the next in line of the same gender from the Shootout regardless of council.
